Profile

My research focuses on the education of children with special needs and disabilities; and Inclusive Education policy and practice.

Dr Sulochini Pather has over a decade worth of experience teaching at a University including as Principal and Senior Lecturer in the United Kingdom, Oman and South Africa, focusing on special and inclusive education. Sulochini was previously the Programme Director of 2 Masters in Special and Inclusive Education and an EdD International programme. She has been heavily involved in consultancy projects, working with international agencies supporting Ministries of Education and Higher Education institutes in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and the Caribbean. Sulochini has also worked for national research institutions in the UK and South Africa, having spent time as the Director for Inclusive Education in the National Ministry of Education in South Africa. In addition, she has also spent time in teaching roles at both mainstream and special schools prior to moving into tertiary education.

Sulochini has presented at more than a dozen international conferences, including 3 keynote papers. Highlights include:

  • 2013 Re-examining Inclusive Education Developments in Developing Countries through Reflection at 2nd International Conference on Inclusive Education, Bangladesh.

Sulochini has consulted internationally for a variety of agencies supporting the development of teaching programmes in special education and inclusive education, some highlights include:

  • European Union (EU) – Assistant Project Manager - ‘‘Bridging the Gap between Pre- and Primary Education for Children with Special Educational Needs’ - Uganda, Kenya, Swaziland, Botswana, Seychelles, Grenada
  • Finnish Foreign Ministry – Lead Consultant - ‘Enhancing Inclusive Education Teacher Training and Resource Centres in Ethiopia’
  • Asian Development Bank (ADB) – International Expert - ‘Sustaining Access to and quality of Education During Economic Difficulties in Mongolia’
  • Handicap International – Consultant - ‘Supporting Educational Access, Learning and Inclusion of Children with Disabilities in Nepal.’
  • CARITAS (Czech funding agency) – Consultant – ‘Inclusive Education capacity building in Cambodia’

Research Expertise

Sulochini's research focuses on the development of sustainable models of Inclusive Education policy and practice, particularly in developing countries. She is a member of Journal Review panels including International Journal of Inclusive Education 2009 to present and Asia Journal of Inclusive Education 2012 to present. In addition Sulochini has also been a guest reviewer for Disability and Society; Journal of Research in Special Educational Needs; and Journal of Social Inclusion.
