I am focused on promoting school-based educational development by supporting middle leaders through action research. I have a particular interest in mathematics education
Professor Peter Grootenboer previously worked in schools for 12 years as a teacher and leader before moving into the tertiary sector. In 1997 he received a Jim Campbell Award – a national award for teaching excellence in mathematics in New Zealand. Peter completed his MEd and EdD through the University of Waikato focussing on mathematics education and educational leadership (staff development and appraisal). The main focus of Peter’s research has been on affective development in mathematics learning, and recently he has focussed more tightly on praxis development, middle leading and action research.

Peter has worked closely with a variety of organisations relating to expertise in Action Research and Mathematics. He has worked as a critical friend with the "Make It Count" program which involved developing middle leaders to promote improved learning outcomes for Aboriginal and Torress Strait Islander students in mathematics. Peter's Action Research projects have focused on providing clients with the expertise to address local challenges that they can identify, investigate and design to reach sophisticated solutions.
Peter’s research interests include professional practice, mathematics education, educational leadership and action research. In particular, he has focused on school-based educational development through supporting curriculum leaders and action research.
